We hear a lot about Google SERP features these days. And it’s not just talk—they’re popping up in search results everywhere, often in prime spots that demand attention or clicks, effectively pushing organic search results further down the page.

What exactly are these features, and what are they for? Why is it beneficial for your site to appear there, and most importantly, what do you need to do to get your site featured? Read on, and we’ll show you!

Why you need to pay attention to the SERP

For most internet users, the gateway to information is the Google search results page, which is why the battle for top-page rankings is so intense. New features and various types of SERP results are increasingly overshadowing "traditional" organic listings, so you need to stay sharp and ensure your content has a chance to appear in these highlighted spots.

But what are these "magic" SERP features? A SERP feature—or "Search Engine Results Page" feature—refers to the way search engines display their results. These features present websites, information, ads, and other content relevant to the user's search query. They can include organic results, paid advertisements, local business listings, images, videos, and other specialized results, depending on the type of information the user is looking for—and this relevance is the key to getting your own content to appear among these results.

The structure and content of these results pages may vary by search engine, but their primary goal is to provide the most relevant and useful results possible to the user.

Having a website appear in Google’s specialized search features—such as featured snippets, local search results, or the "People Also Ask" section—offers numerous advantages for site owners. These features not only increase visibility and traffic but also enhance brand credibility and strengthen customer relationships.

#m1-y#Let’s look at why it’s beneficial for your site to be part of these special SERP features:##

Increased visibility: Appearing in Google SERP features places your site directly at the top of the search results, significantly increasing the chances that users will notice and click on it. This is especially important for competitive keywords where it’s difficult to stand out among traditional listings.

Higher click-through rate (CTR): Featured snippets and other special features take advantage of the "position zero" benefit, meaning your site’s information appears directly in response to user queries, even before the traditional search results. This can significantly boost the number of clicks to your site.

Brand building and credibility: When your site appears in Google’s specialized SERP sections, it boosts your brand’s credibility in the eyes of users. Google implicitly "recommends" your site as a reliable source, which strengthens your brand’s authority among users and potential customers.

Targeted traffic: Appearing in SERP features allows you to target search queries more precisely, as your site appears for the specific questions or topics for which it is most relevant. This means that the visitors arriving at your site are already interested in the content or products you offer.

Competitive advantage: Appearing in Google SERP features provides a competitive edge over rivals who only appear in traditional search results. This allows you to stand out from the crowd and gain an advantage in the market.

What are SERP features in practice?

Over the years, Google has continuously evolved its search engine results page (SERP) to make it even easier for users to find the information they are looking for. Today, the first results page has become almost like a colorful, interactive picture book for children, where you just have to tap, and it opens right up.

But what exactly can we find on the first page? According to the "rulebook," it lists the websites most relevant to the keywords entered by the user. You can find everything here, from traditional organic results to paid ads, along with various additional features. Let's look at the most important ones for us:

Text snippets

This is perhaps the type we encounter the most. These are excerpts from websites that appear directly within the search results, often accompanied by an image. Their goal is to provide a quick and accurate answer to the user's query.

Rich snippets

These are special search results enhanced with structured data that display additional information, such as cooking time, calorie count, or the author in the case of recipes.

The knowledge panel is an information box that appears on the right side of the search results and typically contains key information about products, brands, locations, or people.

Detailed information

Detailed information features provide immediate answers to a specific question without the user needing to navigate to another page. This data can come from multiple sources and is very useful for queries related to travel, for example.

In addition to the above, there are other features such as "discover more places," "hotels," or "podcasts," as well as the well-known "PPC ads" features, and the list is constantly growing.

How can I increase my presence in SERP feature results?

The good news is that the strategy for successfully appearing in SERP features does not differ much from what is required for your site to perform well in organic search results. Let's look at what you need to pay attention to!

Content and the use of appropriate keywords

We have often heard that high-quality, keyword-rich content increases a website's relevance and authority, which promotes better ranking and, at the same time, appearance in SERP features. So, what should we do?

  • Keyword research: The fundamental step is to define targeted keywords. Use keyword research tools to find the terms your target audience is searching for.
  • Content creation: Create valuable, informative content that provides solutions to users' problems. The content should include the selected keywords, but avoid keyword stuffing.
  • Content updates: Regularly update existing content to keep it current and relevant.

Content that matches search intent

The first step in understanding search intent is identifying relevant keywords and phrases. You must also recognize the different types of search intent—informational, navigational, transactional, and commercial investigation—and take these into account when creating content. What does this mean exactly? If the search engine displays long, descriptive content with lots of information for a given keyword, then you should create the same, even if you had originally planned something different.

Mobile-friendly website and fast loading speed

It goes without saying that a mobile-friendly design and fast loading speed are essential for appearing in SERP features. Google follows a mobile-first indexing policy, which means it evaluates the mobile version first.

  • Mobile optimization: Let's ensure our website works perfectly on mobile devices, including fast loading times and easy navigation.
  • Page speed: Let's use tools like Google PageSpeed Insights to assess and improve our website's loading speed.

Increasing authority with backlinks

Quality links help here too, as  quality backlinks, i.e., references from other websites, increase our website's authority and ranking.

2 more technical things not to forget

Let's have a secure connection (HTTPS)

Internet security is a key topic today, and Google also prioritizes user data protection. HTTPS (Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure) is a secure communication protocol that encrypts data during transmission between the user's browser and the website's server. This makes it harder to intercept or manipulate data

Those magical structured data (Schema Markup)

Structured data, or schema markup, is code that we insert into a website's HTML to help search engines better understand the website's content. This code provides information to search engines about the website's content, allowing them to display richer search results.

Fortunately, most major CMS systems have extensions that automatically assign the appropriate schema markup code to texts, so we don't have to insert it manually.

Something a bit different: Local SEO and Google My Business

Google My Business is not exactly new, yet it must be mentioned separately among SERP features. Local SEO is a free and wonderful tool that allows us to rank better for valuable local search queries. Its great advantage is that it only displays business profiles registered in the given geographical area, so you don't have to compete with all competitors as you do in organic search results.

Although a Google My Business (GMB) profile has no direct influence on our site's appearance in other SERP features, keeping our profile accurate and up-to-date is essential for us to appear in a highly visible position in local searches.

Summary

Knowing and understanding Google's SERP features is key to effective information retrieval. Appearing in these features offers significant benefits for websites. It not only increases visibility and traffic but also improves brand credibility while providing a competitive advantage.

As an SEO agency By monitoring and understanding changes in the SERP, we ensure that our clients can always keep pace with the dynamic evolution of the digital marketing world and that their sites can appear in the ever-expanding features of search results pages.
